TMJ disorders are characterized by an imbalanced or misaligned jaw that results in muscle tension in the jaw, neck, and head. By using TENS to relieve this tension, our dentist can diagnose your bite and determine what other treatments will be needed to help you regain proper oral health and function. TENS uses electrical pulses to stimulate muscle contractions which essentially helps to your muscles to massage themselves. This causes your muscle’s metabolism to generate heat that relieves pain and stiffness while improving the mobility in your jaw. TENS also releases endorphins, which help to block pain and improve your mood.
After completing your TENS therapy and diagnosing your bite, our dentist may recommend treatments such as mouth guards, dental restorations, or, in extreme cases, jaw surgery. We will work with you to find the treatment that is most appropriate for your situation.
